Through the Door
In 2021, Tennessee had the second-highest age-adjusted death rate from overdose of all states, (source: CDC). The effects of the opioid crisis have been especially devastating on women and women of color, communities that VG specifically seeks to serve. Women have experienced a higher increase in opioid overdose deaths compared to men. Between 1999 and 2010, deaths from prescription painkillers rose by 400% among women, compared to 265% among men. The opioid epidemic’s toll on Tennessee women of color is significant, with data showing higher rates of opioid prescriptions and overdose deaths in these communities. Efforts are being made to address these disparities, but challenges remain. Vox Grata will raise awareness of this issue, bring voice to the survivors and their heroes, and guide people to life-saving resources.
Vox Grata will host a robust series of community events and activities designed to promote understanding and dialogue about substance use disorder and recovery. These will be offered to the community free of charge. The series of events will culminate in the world premiere of Through the Door on May 21, 2027.
